Report from Padstow Christmas Competition: from Penry Archer
We had 31 people fishing the Camel estuary. Chris Gamble won with this flounder of 2.4 pounds.(Photo below)
There were lots of small bass caught and 6 anglers weighed in all with flounder. All participants went away with a prize, the first ten with hampers arranged by Sarah Rickard the landlady of the Golden Lion in Padstow. After the weigh in and distribution of the prizes there was a great buffet provided by the Golden Lion. Always a great social occasion as partners and children come along to join in.

A superb flounder of 4-0-7 caught by Andy Rule to win the Mawnan Flounder Competition
Last week you probably all heard that an angler lost his life while fishing out of Cadgwith.
We now know that the angler was Chris Newton of Helston SAC.
Chris is pictured below with a plaice of 3lbs 6oz caught earlier this year.
I'm sure you will want to join with the CFSA in sending our condolences to Chris Newton's family and friends for their tragic loss.

November Fish Recorders Report Now Published
Message from County Recorder Adrian Hill
Will all clubs please send me a list of their Club and Assistant Recorders as a matter of urgency.
I will be cross checking all returns for 2013 against who recorded/witnessed the fish. If the rule below has not been followed then they will be removed for 2013.
14 SPECIMEN FISH : (This applies to all fish of 75% or more weighed into CFSA)
a) 1) All fish must be weighed on scales or steelyard (or certified spring balance for fish weighing 20lb or over) which can be checked as accurate machines by the British Standards Weights and Measures Inspectors, and witnessed by a recognised Weigh Master and one adult, preferably a Club official. In the case of a Club Recorder, this means only one witness is required. An official of his/her Club or any other affiliated Club will verify the weight and identification.
In the case of spring balances (digital or mechanical) they must be supported from a tripod or fixed beam and the weight submitted must be the lowest reading.
2) All fish must be weighed on certified Club scales except where the capacity of the scales will not weigh the fish, when certified commercial scales may be used. In every case, the weight must be witnessed by an official of an affiliated Club.

Very important message from Adrian Hill to all clubs-especially their Fish Recorders
Hi,
Please read carefully the attachments.
I’m aware that some of you might not have Microsoft office so please read the PDF.
If you don’t have Office then please send your proposals in a normal text email.
Be aware of the date I need your proposals back.
Hopefully this meeting will run smoothly without any major weight changes etc as we have a lot to cover.
Remember if I have not received your Weights & Measures Certificates for each of your club scales then your 2013 fish could be withdrawn.
Your club needs to
Decide what length of time the Specimen Weights are kept before being changed
1. 2 years
2. 3 years
3. 4 years
4. 5 years
Decide what Weight changes you would like up to a maximum of seven from each section (boat and Shore)
Send in your proposals to me by November 21st 2013. Either by email or post
Adrian

DON'T FORGET THE GENERAL MEETING AT ST DENNIS FRIDAY 11TH OCTOBER 7.30PM
TWO PROPOSALS YOU SHOULD HAVE DISCUSSED WITH YOUR CLUB
1. 5 FISH OR 10 FISH FOR CFSA CHAMPIONSHIPS.
2. GO BACK TO SETTING WEIGHTS LIST EVERY FEW YEARS BY MEETING AND NOT USING FORMULA EVERY YEAR-MAIN REASON IS TO CUT DOWN WORKLOAD OF RECORDER
An extract from an e mail I received from an angler talking about Wiskens-a rock mark in the west of the County:
"There was around 20 plastic bottles,a pair of trousers ,a high viz jacket,3 huge clear plastic sacks about 3ft by 6ft lots of lure packets ,a bog roll , a bag of sausages (unopened) ,I have never seen any thing like it ,Not even at Kerris
What is the matter with people! The angler carried up 3 bags of rubbish but why should he have to-I wonder how much more rubbish ends up in the sea. We don't do ourselves any favours.

It took many years to develop but here at last is a photograph of Bob Pollard surfacing after sneaking back on to his moorings in his new submersible fishing boat.

August Recorders Report Just Published
Several Very Very Important Matters for all clubs
Two Proposals will be voted on at the EGM in October(exact time and date to follow)
1. The CFSA Championships should revert back to 10 fish from the 5 fish format used for 2013-proposed by Looe SAC.
2. The use of the formula for deciding specimen weights should be replaced by a meeting of club representatives once
every 3 to 5 years. This will lighten the workload of the new Fish Recorder considerably- proposed by Adrian Hill.
Please discuss these with your clubs and come to the EGM in October with your votes already decided. Your club meeting is the place to discuss these proposals not at the EGM itself. Secretarys have been sent more details.
Fish Recorders position for 2014
Adrian Hill took on the Fish Recorders Role for 2013 because, quite honestly, the CFSA was in a bit of a mess regards the recording of fish. At the time Adrian made it clear that this was for one year only. By the AGM in January we will need to have a name or two of people willing to take on the role. Adrian is trying to reduce the workload of the Recorder-hence proposal 2 above and the 75% minimum fish rule this year.
There is the possibility of splitting the role into boat and shore and if this happens one name has already been put forward as possible Boat Recorder but if one person is willing and able to take on the whole job that would be just as welcome. Please talk about this at your club meetings.
Club Scales Certificates
Clubs have been asked to provide copies of their club scales certificates to Adrian Hill. Some clubs have done this while some have not. All scales must be certified -it is not good enough just to bring them to the recorders meeting for checking.
There will be a recorders meeting in November or early December after the EGM and any club who have not provided their certificates by then will have their 2013 fish wiped off!

Note from the Fish Recorder-the boat specimen weight for a Spanish Mackerel is 1lbs not 1lbs 4oz as stated in lists.

A few thoughts that you might like to discuss back at your clubs.
At present the CFSA Weights List is worked out by an automatic formula and so the weights can change every year. This obviously creates a lot of work (unnecessary?) for the Fish Recorder. It has also had the unintentional consequence of making some fish almost out of reach and certainly not really targetable for the Championships. For example a 6lbs weight for a thick lip mullet means getting one of 100% very difficult in Cornwall. On the other hand a 100% whiting you may feel is relatively much easier now with bigger fish showing regularly during the winter.
Should we go back to the weights being set at the annual recorders meeting and then left alone for 3/5 years?
There is also a move to ditch the experiment of only counting your best 5 fish for the various championships. It has meant that, especially from the shore, the whole thing can be largely over in January as the winter fishing can be so productive for whiting/cod/dabs etc.
Should we go back to 10 fish or what about 12 fish?
Or are you happy with 5 fish
Please discuss these at your club meetings and then e mail Adrian Hill with your thoughts.
If these- or anything else- are to be changed for January 2014 they will need to be proposed for the General Meeting in October and rule change proposals need to come from clubs and be with Ralph Elcox by August 12th. The General Meeting would then become an EGM .
If you wait until the normal AGM in January the rules will not be changed until 2015.

Why are anglers leaving our rock marks looking like this.
This photo was sent to me by Jim Taylor but all the marks I fish are looking like this as well. This rubbish is not just left by visitors it's left by local club anglers as well many of whom weigh fish into the CFSA. You can walk miles to a secluded mark now and it's covered in rubbish or the remains of some half burnt bonfire.
Please take your rubbish home and even the rubbish of the idiots that were there before you.

A letter I would like you all to read-the gentlemen lives in mid Cornwall.
Dear Mr Maddern
I am contacting you as a community worker from AgeUK Cornwall in the hope that you might be able to help us find someone to help a gentleman that I met this week.
He used to enjoy sea fishing from the shore from the Headland in Newquay and also from Mevagissey harbour.
He is in his late 50’s, has some mobility problems but can walk short distances, he still drives.
He has lost confidence to go fishing, due to his poor mobility. He feels that he can no longer carry his kit and walk down to fish at the same time, so is looking for someone who might be able to assist him.
What I think would help him is an able bodied male companion who can befriend him, help him to regain some confidence which in turn will help him to become more active and positive.
Please let me know if you know of anyone that might be able to help with this or any other fishing clubs/organisations that I can put him in contact with.
Many thanks Nicola Ridgment

If you are out and about and see old nets washed up or birds caught in nets or nets being set illegally or dead seals and dolphins etc. please take photographs and send them to the website and they will be passed on to the relevant people.
It is going to take a great deal of effort to change the rules and all anglers are going to have to help if you want to see change.

A letter from Malcolm Gilbert
I am pleased to report that at the CFSA General Meeting on Friday 26th April, the meeting unanimously supported the proposal to run a petition across the County to present to the IFCA for the ending of entanglement, enmeshing and surround netting in all waters inside the ten metre depth contour as per chart datum.
As well as providing protection to close to shore shallow waters, it would also effectively protect estuaries and simplify enforcement. The only netting allowed under such a bylaw would be: netting for scientific/research purposes, salmon netting as currently licenced by Environment Agency, sandeel netting as currently permitted and use of landing nets in conjunction with hook & line fishing.
This is NOT an attack on commercial fishing. Our proposals would apply to both licenced commercial boats and hobby netting whether carried out from boats or from the shore. Commercial shellfishing with pots and traps and all hook and line fishing (commercial and hook and line) would continue as current.
I would now like to set up a small working group to finalise details and logistics. Lucien Burzynski, Brian Collick, Chris Wills, Steve Ford and John Brooks have already indicated they would be willing to play a role.
I intend to inform BASS, the Angling Trust and the National Mullet Club of our initiative and invite their support. I also intend to seek the support of the Salmon and Trout Association, as well as the Wild Life Trusts, Natural England and RSPB.
There will, I am sure, be other organisations we can inform and seek support from.
The logistics in Cornwall will not be easy. Lands End to Bude or Torpoint is two hour drive. Ideally, we require individuals at the eastern end of the County to assist.
I propose the working group meet ASAP. Please advise availability for either Tuesday 7th, Thursday 9th or Friday 10th. If the working group is mainly west end of County based, we can perhaps meet at Camborne but if we get volunteers from the eastern end, we will meet mid Cornwall .

2013 AGM Report
The meeting on Saturday was the best attended for many years.
The officers of the CFSA were all re-elected with two noticible exceptions. Pete Hersey has reluctantly given up as Fish Recorder due to pressure of work. Adrian Hill (past Fish recorder) has agreed to take on the job for an initial 12 month period and the unfilled post of Assistant Recorder has been filled by Andy Butler-both of Truro SAC.
CFSA President-Paul Taylor was not able to attend due to serious illness but was re-elected in his absence.
Malcolm Gilbert gave a report outlining the importance of the title Recreational Sea Angling.(full report above)
The proposal later was not passed on the exclusion of fish selling by CFSA members- but in this report Malcolm stated the CFSA is going to have to decide whether it represents Recreational Sea Anglers or just rod and line anglers-that is anglers who do sell some or all of their catch.
Clubs need to spend the next 12 months discussing this issue within their own membership as it is bound to reappear next year perhaps with a slightly different wording to tackle questions raised.
Of the proposals there were 3 passed.
1. Members must have the agreement of the executive if using the CFSA name in correspondence with other bodies replying to letters in the press or writing to your MP for example. (Unanimous)
2. Members may use a max of 3 hooks and a max of 3 rods. From January 2014. But not in fixed time comps such as ladies
or junior month long comps, Easter/Xmas comps etc. The Executive will attempt to draught further guidance on this rule change before it comes into force in 11months time. (by 11 Votes to 10)
3. Just a clarication of the rule wording of the shore and boat championships which for 2013 are based on 5 fish not 10(unanimous)

Friday 30th November-New County Record for Chippy Chapman of MBAS
Having put so many other anglers onto great fish recently Chippy found time to catch a beauty himself today. This boat caught small eyed ray turned the scales at 13-5-2 and was one of many caught during a break in the weather that enabled BITE to get out for the day. Other fish on the day included a small eyed of 11-13-12 and a blonde of 13-4-2 for Sam Narbert.
The previous County Record was a fish of 12-5-3 caught by Trevor Evans of Padstow SAC back in 1990.

Hooray for Andy
On a trip to a mark most people would dismiss for targetting rays Andy Bennetts of MBAS landed this lovely small eyed ray of 10-7-7.
The bait was an extra large sandeel. Andy has landed several rays from the same mark showing that we sometimes need
to rethink our ideas.
Well Done Terry-sunday 28th october
Terry Hill had a productive trip on the River Fal catching a spotted ray of just under 4lbs and a thornback of 7lbs.
Both fish were kept alive all day and returned after weighing.
Terry is Adrian Hill's brother and a member of
St. Mawes Sea Angling Club.

Tuesday 23rd Oct: A group of CFSA anglers from Truro and Mounts Bay enjoyed a successful day on BITE, with Chippy Chapman, catching a real assortment of species. Foggy but calm conditions plus friendly rivalry between several of those near the top of the boat championship table made for a great day's fishing. Full details of fish weights to follow shortly.
Look out for tagged rays and flatfish-especially you boat anglers-possible £25/£50 reward to help research at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth-full details on conservation page.

What about this for a great days shore fishing for the Rule family. Sue's two fish weighed 7-0-8 and
7-8-12. Most people would be delighted to catch one of them. Are those pollack 5ft long or has Sue shrunk!
But not to be outdone Alan went one better with a superb pollack of 9-12-6.

Cath Elcocks and Andy Butler had a good day bagging these two spotties of 6-0-4 and 5-7-15 both fish returned alive. Both 100% fish.
Weds Oct. 17th: Just had an email from the captor-he is Ben Conway from Newquay-aged 29. Ben says he has been fishing for lots of years but only taking it seriously for 2 to3 years. Thanks for contacting us Ben and again well done a wonderful catch.
This is the shore bass of 14-4 that everyone is talking about caught on October13/14th. Not a CFSA fish but thought you might be interested. Hope the angler-don't know his name-doesn't mind me putting it on this site. It was caught on a sandeel/squid bait while fishing for rays and was weghed on a club scales. Great fish well done to him.

What a Superb Days Fishing at Mounts Bay Open- and free pasties at the weigh in as well
Sunday 14th October brought good Autumn weather and some superb fish. One of the best One Day weigh ins for a long time. There were 12 fish over 100% judged against the CFSA One Day Weights List. That meant that two 100% fish caught by Paddy Rule and Steve Beer did not win prizes.with there Thornback of 8-11-1 and Wrasse of 4-8-0 respectively.
There were 5 other fish over 90%. My apologies to Jason Harris of Camborne Club as I seem to have missed him out when taking photos and he had the winning fish but I'm sure the £200 will make up for it. If you've got a photo Jason send it to me. The same for Kevin Griffiths who was 3rd and won a £60 tackle voucher. My excuse is I was busy weighing so many fish!
The best fish by a junior was a mackerel of 1-6-2 by Harrison Southworth of Truro Club. 2nd was Ethan Gould of MBAS with a pollack of 2-8-14.
Results:
1st Jason Harris- Camborne Pollack 6-7-8 143% 2nd Mark Putt Geevor- Pollack 6-6-5 142%

Message from John Munday: John serves on The Steering Comittee for Sea Angling 2012. At the moment the MMO (Marine Management Organisation)are collecting data of sea anglers catches to see how stocks of sea fish have changed. To encourage anglers to participate they are offering £4000 worth of tackle prizes in a prize draw. To be in with a chance have a look at http://www.marinemanagement.org.uk/seaangling/ The flyer below gives you a brief idea of the project.

Excellent Shore Conger for Colin Mills-CFSA best for 2012
What a Fish
It's that man again. Bob Pollard holding many anglers dream fish a bass of 13-5-4 a new County boat record. It actually beats Bob's own record of 12-14-11 caught in 2007.

Giant Blue
Having been taken out by Bob Pollard from Looe to catch a new Mounts Bay record boat bass of 9-4-0 Chippy Chapman repaid Bob in full by putting him in touch with this beautiful Blue Shark aboard BITE.
The fish was measured and returned.
By calculation it weighed 248lbs and would have been a new British Record if the weight had been confirmed ashore.
Will Harvey of Mounts Bay found a break in the weather during the last week of September to land an excellent shore caught pollack of 6-7-3
