2020 has been one very strange year but considering the upset Covid 19 has caused to everyone we at least all had the opportunity to get out and enjoy our fishing when the better weather arrived.
It proved to be an equally strange year on the fish front and despite good numbers of some fish being around at certain times, specimens were hard to find which seems to be a continuing trend in recent years.. That said, several new record fish were captured from both the boat and shore. From the shore, Peter Hersey of ECC Ports SAC had a lovely spotted Ray of 7.15.2 just pipping the previous record. Nicky Pryor of Camborne AA also captured an unusual White Bream of 2.5.9 that smashed the previous record by nearly a pound.
From the boat, Richard Hitchings of St Mawes SAC broke the long standing Small Eyed Ray record with a fish of 13.3.3 whilst Bev Hitchings of St Mawes SAC landed a new ladies small eyed ray record of 12.3.7. Other ladies boat records broken in 2020 were Jean Woodman of Looe SAA who captured a fine Blue Shark of 110.4.0, Belinda Taylor of St Mawes a scad of 1.3.13, Jasmine Williams of Camborne AA with a Blonde Ray of 11.3.7 and Bev Hitchings a mackerel of 2.0.4
Bob Pollard and Peter Hersey won the senior men boat and shore championships respectively. Bob managed to do this despite only recording 9 specimen fish which included a very nice coalfish of 13.5.8. This was also the top boat caught specimen for 2020 captured in early January. Peter had both an excellent beginning and end to the year topped by his new record Spotted Ray that was captured in January followed up by a very good shore caught ling of 10lb 12 Oz in December and a last minute Whiting of 2.6.0. Well done to both of you for recording some excellent specimen fish which deserve to win these championships.
For the ladies, big congratulations go to Sue Rule of Camborne AA and Beverley Hitchings St Mawes SAC for winning the shore and boat championships respectively with each recording some good specimen fish. Beverley landed 2 new County boat records within her 6 specimen fish tally. On the juniors, Jago Davis and Zach Davis of Tintagel SAC won the U16 and U11 junior shore Championship with Jago also winning the Boat championship for the U16 category. Sonny Sutton of Looe SAA won the boat U11 championship.
Overall, from the shore, it would appear to have been generally harder than usual to find and catch good specimen fish. It was however good to see a number of anglers achieving 10 species in 2020 from both the boat and the shore. The move to 50% as a qualifying specimen percentage has undoubtedly been beneficial for that. There were a good range of fish species captured with over 35 species being recorded from both the boat and the shore. Notable shore caught specimens included a Garfish of 2.5.1 for Pete Wilkins of St Columb SAC which was a new St Columb record and a red mullet for Simon Toms of 2.5.10 which was a new Truro City SAC Club record.
There was certainly a notable lack of larger bass around which did not make any notable appearance when we would have expected them and I know that a lot of keen bass anglers have commented on this. Spotted and Thornback Ray were also notably absent from the Fal and Helford rivers and you can only assume that someone has been targeting these with nets. On a more positive note, there do appear to been more small eyed ray around last year and on some evenings in certain locations there were certainly as many around as I have ever seen with quite a few double figure fish mixed in amongst them which was good to see.
On the boat side of things it was also good to see a range of clubs recording fish. You can clearly see some anglers developing their skills to target better quality fish every year helped in part by some excellent local charter skippers who can clearly put their anglers onto good specimen fish. Other notable boat caught specimens included a Conger of 54.0.0 for Ron Moody of St Columb SAC, Ron also had a very nice Tope of 33.0.0, Mark Davis of Tintagel SAC with a Greater Weaver of 1.10.14 and a Blonde Ray of 23.6.14, Richard Bates of Camborne AA with a Blue Shark of 110.9.7, Jason Rule with a Starry Smooth Hound of 20.15.0,Nigel Rundle of Tintagel SAC with a Greater Weaver of 1.10.11, Bull Huss of 17.1.11 as well as whiting and black bream both over 3 lb.
I hope you all get out and fish and continue to record fish once the current lock down is over – I think we will all deserve some extra luck in 2021.
