An interesting photo sent to me by Simon Toms, it just goes to show what is happening off our coast and perhaps explains why it is just so hard to catch decent fish these days. All foreign fishing vessels, hopefully with Brexit happening and increasing conservation measures all the time, maybe we can one day reclaim our waters!
CFSA Christmas Comp
A huge thank you to Gwinear Angling for Sponsoring the competition and all those involved. A fantastic turn out yet again with some absolutley cracking fish weighed in to take the prizes, although I did not get among the prizes myself I did enjoy the free beer laid on by Sharps Brewery! 3 Padstow boys top the top prizes with Steve Rodding (pictured) taking the cash with a 3B rockling and a fine bass of 8.1.5, a fish that quite easily could of been a double figure fish if it had a full belly.
Im sure we are all looking forward to the next CFSA competition!

Dear angler,
If you care at all about the plight of bass stocks and the right of the public to go fishing and to selectively take a fish from the sea to eat, please click the link in attached letter to sign the Petition. That isn’t enough however, please also click the ‘campaign’ link and take the time to write to your MP.
In addition to the suggestions shown when you click ‘campaign’ please see below a sample letter already sent to a Cornish MP.
We must do this because if sea anglers are taken out of the bass fishery, what next? Recent scientific reports in respect of pollack in the Celtic sea and English Channel are already highlighting that the recreational catch of pollack “is unknown but thought to be significant”.
Are anglers to be stopped from catching or keeping a pollack next?

Sample letter to MP
Dear MP,
I have read that bass angling may be banned for the first six months of 2018 and that during the second half of 2018 between July 1st and December 31st recreational anglers will be allowed to fish for bass but not allowed to keep any.
So in 2018 if proposed measures are implemented by the Council of Fisheries fishing opportunity meeting in December, I will not be able to keep a single bass to take home and eat unless I buy one from a commercial hook and line fisherman who can keep and sell 4 tonnes for the year.
Why is it proposed to allow commercial hook and line fishermen to catch and sell 4 tonnes each whilst I wont be able to keep even one bass?
Do the fish in the sea belong to commercial fishermen? I thought they are a commonly owned resource and belong to everyone. If members of the public are not allowed to keep any for conservation reasons, no bass whatsoever should be kept by commercial fishermen and sold for personal profit.
These proposals totally overlook the public societal nature of our marine environment including fish.
Are the public going to be stopped from picking mushrooms or blackberries in 2018 so that commercial operators can harvest all the spoils for personal profit?
Yours sincerely, Very upset angler

The Big Wrasse Debate
Wrasse, a species widely regarded as an angler’s fish is coming under increasing pressure from commercial exploitation as a cheap pot bait, as a table fish and a live fishery has developed for salmon farms.
Full details can be found at: http://www.anglingtrust.net/page.asp?section=1674§ionTitle=Help+Save+Our+Wrasse
If any club or individual CFSA member wishes to attend a meeting with other anglers to discuss what anglers can do to try and prevent wrasse stocks becoming over exploited please let me know and I will try to arrange a date and venue.

Only a few days left to complete the survey below
Cornwall IFCA wants to improve its understanding of recreational sea angling in Cornwall.
We are asking people to help us to gather data on recreational angling in Cornwall and, most importantly, to help us understand what anglers feel are the key issues facing them and what we could do to deal with these issues.
Following on from a public meeting in winter 2016 we have created an online survey which we would greatly appreciate as many sea anglers as possible completing. The survey is anonymous and very quick to complete.
This survey will be open from the 1 July to the 1 September 2017.
Please follow the link below to complete the survey.

"Overall, the fishing in July was very quiet not helped by bouts of poor weather. The lack of some fish species, notably Mackerel and sandeel, which may also be weather related, does appear to have also affected the fishing. Lets hope it improves!"

Sent an email to IFCA regarding ring netting and dead fish-this is their reply. At least it shows that our concerns are being looked in to.
Thank you for your email regarding the dead fish washed up along the strandline on Loe Bar.
Following up on your email, officers visited Loe Bar yesterday and took a sample of the fish as well as some photographs of the beach. The information they gathered has been discussed with the Cornish Sardine Management Association (CSMA), who have also conducted their investigation into this incident. It would appear that there are large quantities of small pelagic fish (herring, sprat) shoaling mainly on the surface during the day, often very close to the shore. As a result, at certain times, they are being caught as bycatch with the sardines, which are the target species. Whilst the skippers have attempted to either avoid shooting their ring nets in areas where these smaller fish are, or slipping them live from the ring nets, some are still getting enmeshed in the nets and have to be removed before they are stored, leading to the situation which you observed on the beach.
The Cornish Sardine Management Association has written to all its members this afternoon, highlighting the concerns that have been raised and alerting skippers to the need for additional vigilance to minimise any bycatch of other pelagic species.

Re the dead fish story below:
Ring netters are working very close to the shore in this area. Could there be a connection? Other local commercial fishermen are very unhappy about the ring netters and the fact that the number of boats chasing the pilchards etc is affecting their hook and line fishing. One ring netter ran into an anchored yacht off Newlyn recently.
Please could anglers contact IFCA to complain about just how close to shore these ring netters are working. It is important that individuals contact IFCA as if they receive a lot of individual complaints then they are obliged to act.

May and June results now published-Thanks to Simon Toms-also thanks to Simon for the report below.
To all anglers in the CFSA,
The delay in posting up the CFSA update for May has reflected the need to deal with the issue of accepting and weighing of fish from Swanpool lake. This affects some of the fish already recorded in the CFSA to date. The issue has now been fully discussed within the CFSA and it has been agreed and clarified that no fish from Swanpool Lake are allowed to be weighed into the CFSA or within CFSA run competitions. This reflects the permit conditions associated with being able to fish the lake
It is important to note that the small number of anglers fishing under the Swanpool fishing permit have signed up to a permit condition which requires permit holders not to remove fish from the lake or retain them within keep nets. This permit condition was specifically requested by anglers to prevent other permit holders taking fish to weigh into clubs and competitions. The matter was discussed within the CFSA some years ago and it is believed that the permit conditions were clear and understood.
There is an outstanding question regarding the legality of requiring anglers to hold a fishing permit whilst fishing in tidal waters which would make all fish caught in the lake eligible. However, attempts to clarify the legal position to date have proven to be unsuccessful and the current position will be held until such time that this is resolved.
On a brighter note, some great fish have been recorded over the last two months.
In May Geoff Wherry of Grenville SAC recorded a very good Starry smooth hound of 14.0,0 and Mark Reed, Padstow SAC, had a Thornback Ray of 13:10.15 . Both fish being new club records. Greater Weavers also put in an early appearance this year with Kevin Lenderyou, Truro City SAC, having the best of 1.7.12 and Spencer Grey, Camborne AA, having one of 1.6.14.
From the boat, Marcus Watts of Mevagissey SAC weighed a Gilthead Bream of 6.0.7 and Bob Pollard had an outstanding Starry Smooth hound of 28.7.7. It is likely that this fish would have been a new British record if killed and weighed officially. The fish was released unharmed after measuring. Duncan Randoll also had the years best plaice so far with a fish of 3lb 6oz 6 dms.
In June, Skip Mccabe with a lovely spotted Ray of just over 6lb 11 oz. Nick Tops, Tintagel SAC with a great shore caught bass of 10lb 15oz ( measured and released). Incidentally, Nick weighed it on digital scales at 10.88 lb or 10lb 14 with the calculation based on length working out at 10LB 15oz. I don’t think many people would quibble with that as the fish has gone back alive and well during the catch and release period. Matt Pengelly had the best of a number of Greater Weavers at 1.8.4 narrowly beating a fish by his fellow club member Nathan Giddy at 1.7.8 both of which were new club records.
From the boat, there was an outstanding fish recorded. Marcus Watts, Mevagissey SAC, recorded a new county record Gilthead Bream of 8lb 2 oz 13dms which is fantastic specimen fish and worthy winner of the fish of the month. Jason Hawke Camborne AA, had a nice Golden Grey mullet of 2lb 4 oz 2 dms with
jGlen Brewer of Mevagissey SAC recording a Ling of 31lb 0oz 0 dms.
Hopefully now back to normal ! If you haven’t already please forward details of ladies and juniors to Ralph Elcox to register for the CFSA August festival - great prizes available to those who weigh fish!

URGENT: Can you help-we have received the following request-Truro Area
I work at the male refuge in Cornwall for males and their children fleeing domestic abuse. We have a gentleman with us who has experienced trauma from domestic abuse. He has in the past enjoyed fishing and would like to go again. The only thing I know about fish is how to cook it, so would really like some one to offer to take this gentleman out for a fish.We have had a fishing rod loaned to us for him, but have no idea how to support him how to fish or where to go etc.
Would you or one of your members be kind enough to offer him a fishing session?
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Is this your litter?
Another reminder for anglers to leave fishing marks in a clean state.
Very bad for environmental reasons but also gives anglers a bad name.
The rubbish below was picked up from a mark on the Lizard.
Surely if you can walk 1/2 mile then clamber down a steep cliff you can take your rubbish home with you?

April Summary from Simon Toms-full results on Recorder's Page
April saw a steady improvement in the number and diversity of fish species weighed into the Federation. Lee Hersey, ECC Ports SAC, had a super spotted Ray of 6lb 10oz 3 dms to take the Fish of the Month award. Lee was closely followed by Alan Rule, Camborne AA with a personal best Plaice of 2lb 15oz. This was a large fish that would have been substantially heavier if in good condition. Peter Gorden of Tintagel club was close behind with another good plaice of 2lb 12oz. It is good to see a return of larger plaice which appeared to have virtually disappear for shore anglers over several years. Matt Healeas of Padstow SAC had a good month recording 3 specimens in the top 10 fish including a new Padstow SAC small eyed ray of 12 lb 5 oz. Ed Schliffke, Padstow SAC, recorded the best Thick Lipped Mullet to date of 5lb 6oz and Paul Hawken, Grenville SAC recorded a very good LSD of 3lb 7 oz. Nice to see our more mature members still recording good shore caught fish. Well done to all of these anglers –good angling.
As the weather improved throughout the month, more CFSA members ventured out onto the water with some good specimens recorded. Bob Pollard, Looe SAA recorded a specimen LSD of 3lb 7oz 13 dms o take the Fish of the Month award. Mark Davis, St Columb SAC was a close second for fish of the month with a fine Black Bream of 3lb 8oz. Mark had a good day out in the boat chartered from Newquay recording a specimen smooth hound on the same trip of 19lb 9oz.
Glenn Brewer, Mevagissey SAC recorded a fine ling of 28lb which is the best recorded to date with Kevin Hargreves and Derek Nute of Tintagel SAC both recording ling of just over 23lb 8oz.

Terry Prisk of Looe SAC with a lovely three beard of 2lbs 12oz and a flounder of 2 lb 8 oz
March Results published-thanks to Simon Toms-a little bit delayed as Simon has been working in Sweden
As expected, fishing in February started as we left off in January with some interesting sessions experienced by many anglers on Loe Bar where whiting, dabs, small codling to 2lb and the odd haddock and small eyed ray were caught. The estuary mouths also provided some unusual fishing for the time of year with mackerel and other bait fish evident in good numbers on some days.
Terry Prisk managed to find a very good three bearded rockling of 2:12 to take Fish of the month for February.
A number of anglers have commented on the fact that three bearded rockling appear to have declined in numbers in recent years which may or may not be associated with what appears to be a massive increase in the number of small congers evident on many marks where they have become very common. It will be interesting to see if the conger fishing improves markedly over the next few years as larger fish appear to have become relatively scarce in recent years. I was fortunate to land a personal best small eyed ray of 12:14 from Loe Bar which I had hoped was going to beat the long standing Truro club record. However, having cleaned all of the slime and gravel off the fish before weighing it missed that by 4 oz. However, it was a very good fish and my 4th over 12lb so I was still pleased with that. The capture of this fish was quite interesting in that the session until this capture was quiet with frozen sandeel baits coming back untouched. However, back in December I had visited a local beach following a massive deposit of dead fish from a commercial fishing accident and found that many of the fish on the standline were not pilchards but anchovies. I therefore filled a bucket to take home to freeze for bait. On the night in question, I had by chance put in a packet of anchovies and as it was quiet decided to put a whole one on. The ray took the anchovy within 15 minutes of the bait being in the water. I immediately baited up with another whole anchovy and within minutes of the bait settling, it was again taken by a fish. This proved to be a very surprising and ultimately disappointing capture with the fish being a Pollack that measured 70cm which ordinarily would have put it at well over 8lb if in condition. However, this fish was not in a good state and unbelievably had somehow lost the sight in both eyes and had a damaged mouth. As a result, it and was literally skin and bone weighing just over 4lb ! the fish was quickly returned still alive but things didn't look helpful for the future! The Anchovy "super bait" continued to produce a string of whiting and codling whilst the standard mackerel or sandeel bait on the other rod caught the occasional fish. The lesson for me from this was never be content to sit on the same old baits and if all is quiet try something a bit different. I know other anglers have been trialling other baits such as black lug with similar changes in fortune.
From the middle of February, as normally experienced, the fishing slowed considerably with few sizeable fish being acught with a reliance upon catching small mackerel and LSDs. Kevin Lenderyou of Truro City SAC did manage to find a nice thick lipped mullet of 5lb 5oz.
March fishing was painfully slow with most clubs returning at best a hand full of LSDs. Peter Hersey did manage to find a nice starry smooth hound of 11.6.9 - the fish was returned alive after measuring which is good to see. see below for Pete's photo. Other good fish recorded were a good three bearded rocking of 2.3.9 for Ryan Maggot of Camborne and Bull Huss of 13.13.1 for Sean Haley of ECC Ports.

Rubbish on Fishing Marks
We all know that our fishing marks are often left in a terrible state -surely it's time we as responsible anglers did something about it.
If you see anglers leaving rubbish-unless it's a personal risk to you-make it known that you find it disgusting.
Could we also ask all CFSA members to carry a bin bag with them to clear up after the brainless ones in our midst. Let's make a real difference.
Let's also make taking your litter home or to the nearest bin a normal thing to do-you wouldn't leave your rods on the rocks, so why leave your litter, much of which can be lethal to wildlife.

Message from Recorder Simon Toms
The final 2016 Fish Recorder's Report has been updated and is on the Recorder's page with a summary.
I have very much appreciated the help of recorders and anglers who have helped spot errors and corrections in the report to ensure that it is an accurate record of 2016. There are literally hundreds of lines of data to be processed with potential for errors slipping in at any time.
I would also like to thank those that have said how much they appreciate the report which makes it worthwhile. It does act as long standing record of the Cornish fishing year and is something to look back on and share with younger members of the family to get them interested in fishing.
A small request is that this year we get more good quality clear photographs of good fish taken at the fishing mark or on the boat at the time of capture (and a few smiles as well ) this year. Some anglers look as though they have just lost their wallet! Equally some very good photos of some excellent fish.
If anybody spots any additional errors there is still time to correct them - just call me.

2017 New year report to date.
The New Year started with a relatively calm, quiet spell and, as a result, fishing slowed a little, particularly at Loe Bar. However, over the first three weeks of January, some very nice specimens were landed by Federation members including Flounder to 2lb 15 oz, dabs to 1lb 2oz, a cracking whiting of 3lb 4 oz ( Sam Morris, Grenville SAC) caught at Loe Bar and a stunning spotted Ray of 7lb 14 oz 6 drams for Chris Bird of ECC Ports SAC. This spotted Ray was within just a few drams short of the current Cornish record Spotted Ray record captured by Liam Warder also of ECC Ports SAC just a few months previously. Pete Hersey and Sean Haley also recorded very good specimens spotted rays of over 5lb 12 Oz. Great to see some of the younger senior CFSA members catching some very good specimens and I hope this encourages them to persevere over the coming months to find further good specimens
Bass to 7lb 10oz ( weighed alive and safely released), small eyed Ray to over 11 lb, cuckoo wrasse and mullet to just under 5lb have also been caught. A full update on the January fish returns from Cfsa member clubs will be available shortly on the website. I think it's fair to say that the top 10 fish of the month could be very impressive!
The boat fishing has also started with a bang this year with some excellent specimens being recorded. Bob Pollard of Looe SAA started where he left off in 2016 with another fine Haddock of 5 lb 13 oz taken on that very consistent fish finding boat "Bite Adventures" out of Penzance. However, Chippy is not the only Skipper finding these big haddock with a fantastic specimen of 9lb 9oz being taken by Peter Allsopp of Looe SAA taken on Nigel Hodges boat " Wave Chieftan" out of Mylor.
Following that Mevagissey SAC members have also been capturing some fine specimens with Marcus Watts taking a lovely Ling of 31 lb and his fishing partner Kieran Staff getting a nice Cod of 17 lb 9oz. Jason Hawke had a nice red Gurnard of 2lb 2oz 3 dms. What a great start to the new year !

Final Fish Recorder's Report for 2016.
Thanks to Simon Toms who has put a tremendous amount of work into this superb report.
Would all members please look at the report below and if they spot any errors or would like photographs of fish to be included as a record for posterity ( a copy will eventually be placed into the Cornwall Records Office to show people in a few hundred years that fish were swimming in the sea around Cornwall).
The final copy will be published in two weeks so this gives everyone a chance to review and comment.
Would last years winners please return cups and trophies back to Ralph Elcox as soon as possible

A big thank you to Sean Johns of St Columb SAC who has been appointed Vice Chairman of the CFSA
Note for all anglers fishing in the CFSA clubs.
At the Recorders meeting there were a number of important rule changes made for 2017.
This year provided the tri-annual opportunity for member clubs to propose weight changes for one day competition minimum sizes, one day specimen weights and the annual specimen weights. It is important to point out that CFSA one day minimum sizes are well above the mandatory minimum size limits set for commercial fishing ( e.g Dab of 15cm or a mullet of 20 cm ). Minimum sizes generally exist to provide an opportunity for juniors and lady members to record fish. Most senior competitions are very rarely won with fish fish less than 90% of the one day specimen weights. CFSA qualifying weights for seniors are 50% of the annual specimen weight.

In addition, it has now been agreed that for competitions run under CFSA rules, anglers will now be able to use 3 rods and a total of 3 hooks. This will therefore enable general and competition fishing to be consistent and is one less rule making it easier for all anglers to understand. Anglers are however asked to apply common sense when fishing competitions and make room for other anglers if a mark is popular. These are meant to be social, friendly events with most people acting in a sporting way.
For many years, the CFSA has accepted calculated weights for shark, tope and smoothounds based upon a length to weight conversion. Last year, as a result of bass conservation measures, the CFSA also agreed to accept measured bass which are caught and released if a clear photo of the fish is provided against a tape measure. The length of the fish can be reported on the monthly club return with club recorders scrutinising photographs to ensure that the length can be accurately determined. This has worked well in 2016 with a number of anglers submitting photos and the accurate length of released bass. The weight of the fish has then been calculated from a consistently applied length to weight conversion.Anglers have commented that this conversion provides a reasonably accurate weight estimate normally within a few ounces of the weighed fish. Using the calculated length avoids any ambiguity with the accuracy of people's scales for instance, if the fish is covered in sand or gravel which has been observed in recent months. This is a major step forward in attempting to encompass the views of all anglers not all of whom want to retain fish for eating. With the current state of bass stocks this is widely agreed to be a positive step in the right direction and demonstrates that anglers are at the forefront of conserving bass.
As we have now seen catch and release work well for a number of species, and observed that it can work well at club level, as shown by Mounts Bay Angling Society, it has also been agreed to extend the catch and release policy to Bull Huss and ray species. Length to weight conversions are now available from Cefas and can be used to predict the weight of these species from their total length ( see note attached). CFSA anglers can also help to develop a Cornwall specific length to weight conversion by sending in the length of fish together with the weight of fish that are accurately weighed. As with bass, this approach will help to maximise the opportunity for protecting slow growing species especially those older, larger specimens. If an angler catches a record or is fishing in a competition, these species will however still be weighed in the normal way. For general fishing, it will give the angler more choice, whilst at the same time, helping to protect more of our popular fish species.
